National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated across Australia between May 27 and June 3 every year. In 2019, the theme of National Reconciliation Week is ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage’.

The purpose of the event is to commemorate two significant milestones in the journey to reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community. These include the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

Australians are encouraged to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how we can each help to achieve reconciliation across the country. As a result, it’s hoped that reconciliation will live in the hearts and minds of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation that’s strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

During National Reconciliation Week, school communities are encouraged to take steps towards achieving reconciliation, as the nation moves towards a more unified future.
